Because all the underlying fat is removed underneath the Melanoma during the excision, when the tissue is brought back together, an indent remains underneath the excision. This is done on purpose for Melanomas to allow for assessment of the underlying blood vessels and nerves. This is not typical with other surgeries but is done intentionally with Melanomas. For some people, the indentation will reduce with time, but most are left with some type of indent under the excision.
The combination of surgical knowledge and skills provides Dr G the ability to cure cutaneous malignancies using the technique with the highest cure rate while providing patients with the best cosmetic and functional outcome using plastic surgery techniques. Dr G uses her extensive training and careful consideration of the functional and aesthetic requirements for each patient, and always considers all available treatment options and modalities before undertaking surgery.
In Dr G’s scarce amount of free time away from Calgary Skin Cancer Centre she mixes her love of Africa with her dedication to serving others by volunteering her surgical skills with a charitable organization, Facing Africa. This UK based surgical organization travels to Ethiopia to provide much needed reconstructive surgery to paediatric patients that have suffered disfigurement related to a destructive gangrenous process called NOMA. This work is close to Dr G’s heart and she is proud to be a part of Facing Africa.
On the evenings and weekends, Dr G can be found at home with her fur-baby, Cassius. She also enjoys tending to her outdoor pond and has a love of all things plant related. Her home is somewhat of an indoor rainforest!
Most of all, Dr G loves her work and gives her patients her absolute best every day at Calgary skin Cancer Centre.
